Athletics Carnival
Our Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday at Victoria Park. Many thanks to the parents who have volunteered to help at the event, and my sincere apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced by the change of date. Students who are participating in the 800m events will need to be at Victoria Park for a 9am start. All other Primary students will walk to the carnival with their class after our morning assembly. Infants classes will travel to Victoria Park by bus at from 11.30am to join us for running races and novelty events. Trials for High Jump will be completed at school next Tuesday.
This year, for the first time, the Northern Region Athletics Carnival will introduce a 1500m event for Junior, Intermediate and Senior boys and girls. Given that we will not have time at our carnival to run this event, students will be able to nominate for trials to be held in coming weeks. A nomination form will be provided to interested students shortly.
Our Lady Help of Christians
Friday is the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christian, Patroness of Australia; and 2HR will lead an Infants prayer assembly in the PAC on Friday morning.
This Feast Day has been celebrated in Australia since 1844. The early church in Australia had a special reason for turning to Mary: it was largely through the saying of the Rosary that early Australian Catholics kept the faith alive as no priests were sent to the colony. And until 1820, Mass was not allowed, with the exception of a brief period in 1803-1804.
Prayer to Our Lady Help of Christians
Almighty God, deepen in our hearts
our love of Mary Help of Christians.
Through her prayers and under her protection,
may the light of Christ shine over our land.
May Australia be granted harmony, justice and peace.
Grant wisdom to our leaders and integrity to our citizens.
Bless especially the men and women
of the Australian Defence Force and their families.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Mary Help of Christians, pray for us.
Mobile Planetarium Incursion
Tomorrow Mt Carmel will be visited by a mobile planetarium for Years 3 to 6 students to have an interactive star-gazing experience in the PAC.
2020 Enrolments
The official enrolment period for Catholic Schools in this Archdiocese closes next Friday 31 May. If you have a pre-school child ready for Kindergarten next year, enrolment forms can now be completed online, or please contact the front office if you need a hard-copy enrolment form. An interview will be organised once the enrolment application is received. If your friends have a child starting in Kindergarten next year, please encourage them to consider Mt Carmel as an option for their child’s education. It would be of great assistance to us if enrolment forms could be completed by next Friday 31 May.
Reconciliation Week
Next week is National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. We will begin the week with a special reconciliation prayer at our Monday morning assembly and then there will be a concert by Indigenous musician, author and educator Lucas Proudfoot in the PAC.
Grandparents’ Morning Tea
A reminder that next Friday, 31 May, we will hold our annual Grandparents’ Morning Tea, coinciding with the Book Fair in the Lacey Library. This is always a special day and I am looking forward to sharing a cuppa with our students’ grandparents and special older friends.
May God’s peace be in your families,
GOSPEL: John 13:31-33, 34-35
When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has been glorified.
If God has been glorified in him, God will in turn glorify him in himself, and will glorify him very soon.
Little children, I shall be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews, where I am going, you cannot come.
I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have loved you.
It is by your love for one another, that everyone will recognise you as my disciples.
REFLECTION
Today John weaves together a variety of images of earth and heaven. John talks about the person who is earthly and who speaks of earthly things. Then John writes that the One who comes from heaven reigns above all. Of course, John is writing about Jesus.
John then reiterates that Jesus is “the One above all.” Jesus testifies to the truth. However, John also writes that no one accepts Jesus’ testimony. If we do believe in Jesus and accept His testimony, we certify that God is trustworthy.
Our belief in Jesus also comes with a responsibility. We are called to proclaim the Gospel by our words and more importantly, by our deeds. We have to live our faith, not simply profess our faith in Jesus. Just as Jesus commissioned his disciples to “go forth and preach the Gospel,” Jesus also sends us forth to live the Gospel and to preach the Gospel in word and deed. This is our call, our challenge and our gift. How will we respond? Will we go forth and spread the Gospel by word and example? Jesus is depending on us! (Sr Kristine Anne Harpenau)
OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIANS PRAYER SERVICE
On Friday, 2HR will lead our infant classes in a prayer service for Our Lady Help of Christians. The prayer service will commence at 9am in the PAC and we warmly welcome everyone form our school community to join us.
RECONCILIATION WEEK
Monday marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week (NRW). This is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Mt Carmel will celebrate National Reconciliation Week with a special prayer on Monday, a visit from Lucas Proudfoot and activities that will be undertaken throughout the week in class.
Let us keep all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our hearts and minds next week.
God Bless,
Warren Ziebowski
Religious Education Coordinator
