Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Feast of the Assumption Prayer Service
Next Monday is the Feast of the Assumption, on which we celebrate Mary’s bodily ascension into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Each of us is called to be the best we can be as people of God. Mary, mother of Jesus, is a wonderful role model for all men and women, boys and girls—she represents courage, compassion and unconditional love. As Christians, we too should strive to demonstrate these qualities in our everyday actions, whether we are in the classroom, at home, on the sporting field or facing burdens in our life.
5/6KG will be leading the school in a prayer service on Monday morning. Unfortunately, due to our current COVID guidelines, we are unable to invite parents to attend.
Altar Servers
The parish is still recruiting Altar Servers to serve at Mass on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Serving on the altar helps children to become more engaged with the Mass and to better understand its rituals. It is also a great way to encourage our children to become active citizens, with a positive attitude towards community service.
Servers must have received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Anyone from Year 4 and up would be most welcome to participate in this important role. Training will be provided during school hours and at Mass by the Liturgy committee and experienced servers. Please return the commitment slip (attached to this newsletter or collected from the front office) if your child would like to help with this special job.
Departing Students
Schools are required to record destination schools for all departing students. I ask that all families of Year 6 students inform us as soon as possible of the high school your child will be attending. In the Forms & Documents tile on the school website and app is a Year 7 2023 Destination eForm, or you can use the link below to access the form directly. I also request that any K-5 families moving from Mt Carmel at the end of this year send me an email (michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au) as soon as possible indicating your intentions along with your destination. Much of this term is spent preparing for next year and our student numbers need to be accurate. Thank you for assisting us with this information gathering.

Yass Valley Council Youth Survey
The Yass Valley Council is seeking feedback from young people (aged 11-24) about the kinds of activities, events or initiatives they would like to see happening in the Yass Valley. There is a very short (5-minute) survey that will allow young people to have a say on how the Office for Regional Youth and the Yass Valley Council spends their funding to best meet the needs of youth in our region. If someone in your family would like to have a say, please use the following link to share your thoughts: https://forms.gle/KUQVzyzWngM7CdNaA
CWA Poster Competition
Entries for the annual CWA Poster Competition are due this Friday. Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 can submit a colouring-in sheet, which can be collected from the office or downloaded from this newsletter; students from Year 2 and above can submit a poster on a large sheet of cardboard, containing pictures and written information about Latvia, or they can submit a postcard to family or friends (template also available from the office or downloadable) describing an interesting event, sights or travels in Latvia, or that can submit a travel journal (suggested format is a standard exercise book) telling of a week’s holiday, real or imagined, in Latvia.
Ideas for entries include national dress, food, buildings, cultural events, etc.
All entries need to have the student’s school, class, name and age displayed on the back.
Irish and Celtic Music Festival Children’s Workshops
On 17-18 September, as part of the Yass Irish and Celtic Music Festival, Mt Carmel will be hosting the Junior Fleadh.
Fleadh (pronounced flah) is a Celtic word that means festival, and it is a chance for students who are interested in Irish music to come and join in free instrumental and dance workshops, culminating in a concert in the Lovat Chapel; all experience levels are welcome. More information and an RSVP link can be found further in this newsletter.
School Board and Community Council Review
The Catholic Education Commission endorsed the establishment of a Working Group to review various aspects of Archdiocesan School Board and Community Council models.
During the course of this year the Working Group has engaged in targeted consultation with internal stakeholders and has had some preliminary discussions with a narrow group of external stakeholders, including representatives from the Catholic School Parents Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn.
The Working Group is now seeking to draw on the experiences, expertise and perspectives of parents and carers, school staff and members of school communities through a process of general consultation. To this end, an Issues Paper has been drafted outlining the key issues that the Working Group has identified to date and posing a number of discussion questions that the Working Group is seeking responses to.
You can go to the webpage: https://cg.catholic.edu.au/school-board-and-community-council-review/foreword/ to submit a response to the questions posed in the Issues Paper. Look for the Share Your Views link under the Resources heading then select Discussion Questions for Parents.
The closing date for submissions is 2 September 2022.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 4! Kindergarten’s Religious Education unit of work explores Jesus, the Storyteller. Students were invited to bring in their favourite story to share with their class and explain why it’s special. During my visit to KJG and KNB I shared my two favourite stories: The Magic Hat by Mem Fox and Being Brave (written in Greek).
The Feast day is held every August 8th, in honour of the revered Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. She was the first Saint of Australia, and her influence in the country has spread far and wide. She is recognised for her commitment to the poor, helping those who needed it the most in any way she could (Mount Gambier Point, 2021). Below are a few of Saint Mary’s quotes:
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News

Prayer
Dear Father,
We bring our fears to you, the fears that weaken us and diminish us.(Pause)
Help us to know the depths of your love for us. Gift us with the peace of Christ.
Help us together to ‘stand ready’, ‘dressed for action and lamps lit.’
We rely on and pray for each other. (Pause)
May your Kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

All children are asked to come dressed up as a book character on the Friday. Please use any dress ups you have at home or swap with a friend/cousin. It is not meant to be a costly event. I encourage that students have a copy of their book to carry with them when they parade. They can borrow from our library or bring the book from your home library.
We will also be having a sausage sizzle on the Friday to celebrate this special day.
There will be more news as Book Week gets closer.
We are having special moments in our Library lessons!
