Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
St Patrick’s Day
Tomorrow we are looking forward to celebrating St Patrick’s Day by wearing green! As part of our fundraising for Project Compassion, we encourage all students to bring a gold coin donation for wearing ‘green mufti’ to school. We look forward to 4SS leading us in prayer tomorrow morning in the Performing Arts Centre. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend. Wear green and bring a gold coin donation.
School Canteen closed this week
Our school canteen will be closed tomorrow, 17 March and Friday, 18 March. Any online orders that are in the system already for this Thursday and Friday will be automatically transferred to next week. Our apologies for this inconvenience.
National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
This Friday is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence and this year the theme is building a Kindness Culture. We have been participating in kindness challenges at Mt Carmel led by our Stage 3 students who started our Kindness Revolution and this has continued with Tilly, Emily and Gypsy organising daily kindness challenges that are announced each morning at lines.
Bullying is a word that carries a great deal of weight, and in many instances, it is used to describe things that are not bullying at all. The national definition of bullying for all Australian schools defines bullying as an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. Any adverse interpersonal interactions or conflicts, whether considered to be acts of bullying or not, need to be appropriately resolved. If you have any concerns about what your child is experiencing at school, it is important to speak with their class teacher promptly.
NAPLAN
This year, in May, Years 3 and 5 students at Mt Carmel will be completing NAPLAN online. Next Thursday, 24 March participating students will undertake a 45-minute practice test to familiarise them with the online testing environment.
Cultural Diversity Week: Mana – The Spirit of Polynesia Incursion
Next week we will be celebrating Cultural Diversity Week, starting with Harmony Day on Monday. We will be continuing our Kindness Revolution focus with activities to reinforce the theme of “Everyone Belongs.” Just a reminder that next Friday 25 March, Week 8, we are very lucky to have Bernard Mangakahia visiting Mt Carmel School to perform Mana – The Spirit of Polynesia. The incursion will be for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6, with a cost of $6.50 per student, which can be paid to the school office or via Qkr.
May God’s peace be in your families,

Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 7! Year 4 students are exploring the Bible's referencing system to identify some features of text organisation (namely book, chapter, verse, Table of Contents, Index, headings and subheadings) used to order and present information in the Bible. During my visits, students participated in learning activities to locate different bible passages.

Mini Vinnies Workshops
On Thursday 10 March, Year 3-6 students participated in Mini Vinnies Provocation Workshops. Matt Wilson facilitated the sessions and focused on different values, Catholic Social Teachings and meanings behind why we advocate for social justice, making it highly relevant, relatable and practical for students. Students are invited to sign up to Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies group.
Youth Ministry Welcome
A warm welcome to our new youth minister, Clare Healy, who will be working at Mt Carmel every Thursday.
Clare is a 20 year old from Murrumbateman. She is currently working as a receptionist for Care financial counselling service. She loves the beach, coffee, and animals. Clare went to Mt Carmel from Kindergarten to Year 6 and is very excited to be back. As a youth minister, Clare supports the development, implementation and growth of youth ministry in the school.

Reflection
Our aim, as modern day disciples, is to share our encounters with all whom we meet. The evangelised becomes the evangeliser and the mission of the Church continues. We want to recognise our moments of encounter, hear God speak to us and be able to pray “Master, it is good for us to be here” and then go out and share it with the world (Luke Maher, Religious Education and CSYMA Officer ‑ Canberra and Goulburn).
